Order These Greek Dishes If You're A Vegetarian

Blog

When many people think about Greek cuisine, they imagine marinated chicken or pork dishes, as well as those that feature such seafood as octopus and calamari. These dishes are a highlight for many restaurant patrons, but you'll likely want to focus your attention on other options if you follow a vegetarian diet. Most Greek establishments have dedicated vegetarian sections on their menus, so you'll be able to find one or more dishes that suit your diet while still giving you a chance to enjoy some international fare. Here are some Greek takeout dishes to try.

Vegetarian Moussaka

Moussaka is a popular Greek dish that consists of several layers, including ground beef, potatoes, and more. While you might not be able to order conventional moussaka, many eateries have a vegetarian version that may catch your eye as you browse the menu. This type of moussaka often uses eggplant or zucchini as the star of the dish, but vegetarian-safe ingredients such as potatoes, tomatoes, and onions are also present. Some restaurants prepare their veggie moussaka with lentils, which will help to provide a good source of protein and fiber.

Vegetarian Souvlaki

Chicken and pork are often the stars of an order of Greek souvlaki, but you'll commonly find a vegetable-only version that will be suitable for your diet. Souvlaki dishes consist of various types of food placed on skewers and grilled, and different restaurants prepare their vegetable souvlaki in different ways. Mushrooms, eggplant, tomatoes, onions, cauliflower, baby potatoes, and a long list of other non-meat ingredients can appear as part of vegetable souvlaki, giving you a variety of tastes with each bite. Souvlaki often comes with a serving of rice, which can help to fill you up when you aren't eating meat.

Vegetarian Gyro

Gyros, which typically consist of your choice of meat and other toppings inside of a wheat wrap, are a popular dish at Greek restaurants. This can especially be something that is appealing to order to go, given the ease with which you can eat it. While your local Greek eatery likely has a few types of gyros that contain meat, you may also have the option of ordering a vegetarian variation. As with other veggie-focused options, you should expect to find mushrooms, peppers, and tomatoes in your gyro. Chickpeas, lentils, cucumber, onions, and tzatziki sauce are all other options to consider. Check out the menu of your local Greek takeout restaurant to browse these and other vegetarian dishes.

How to Save Money When Eating Out

Welcome to my website. My name is Joanne Taylor. My family and I love eating out at restaurants, but with there being five of us, it can get expensive. In order to be able to continue to indulge in the luxury of eating at restaurants, my husband and I have come up with ways to order and save money. We always thought that ordering kids meals for young children was the cheapest way to go. But we found in many cases, it’s less expensive to order one regular meal and let our two youngest children split it. We make use of coupons whenever possible, restaurant daily specials, early bird specials, and other money savers. I’m going to share some of the ways we’ve been creative in the hope that you will find some useful tips.
